MUMBAI: Consistent performances in the domestic tournaments and in the
Indian
Premier
League (IPL) helped Yusuf
Pathan and Pragyan Ojha earn One-day berths in the Indian team for next
month's tri-series in Bangladesh and the subsequent Asia Cup in
Pakistan.
The selectors, who met here Friday, decided to look forward by selecting
a young squad for both the
tournaments and ignored
former captains Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, who were dropped from
the one-day team during the triangular series in Australia.
Pragyan and Yusuf are the only new faces in the 15-member one-day squad.
Yusuf was also a part of
India's Twenty20 World
Championship winning team in South Africa last year.
Yuvraj Singh has been named as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's deputy.
Murali Kartik has been left out while Harbhajan Singh was not considered
because he is still serving his five-match ban for slapping S. Sreesanth
during an IPL match.
Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan had already pulled out due to injuries.
The tri-series in Bangladesh will be played June 8-14 and the Asia Cup
June 24-July 6.
The squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni
(captain/wicketkeeper), Yuvraj Singh (vice-captain), Virender Sehwag,
Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina,
S. Sreesanth, Yusuf Pathan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Rudra Pratap
Singh, Piyush Chawla and Pragyan Ojha.
