Goodies pile on for Ganguly before X'mas

India should thank Dilip Vengsarkar who showed a lot of enterprise in getting India this unscheduled practice game against KwaZulu-Natal Invitation XI.

The chairman of selectors was happy with the way India made full use of the opportunity as they ended Day One with 271 for six in 77 overs. “In order to maintain form, practice helps but match practice plays a major role. There was a big gap between the first and second Tests and I am happy the Natal officials have obliged us with this fixture,” said Vengsarkar.

Sourav Ganguly, who stayed unbeaten with 41 was delighted with the opportunity too. “The outfield was heavy, which is why I concentrated on taking singles and twos. I am glad I spent time at the crease which I have been trying to do since the Potchefstroom game,” said Ganguly.

Father’s assurance

THE KwaZulu-Natal Invitation XI vs India game is being held at the Northwood Crusaders Club, which is 30 miles away from Durban city. It is Shaun Pollock’s school ground.

Sachin Tendulkar and M S Dhoni were not part of the action on Day One yesterday but that did not stop the crowd from chanting their names.
Back to Pollock.

It is learnt that father Peter drove his Johannesburg-bound son down to Durban airport and assured him that he will return home as a 400-wicket man in Test cricket. Shaun went into the opening Test with 395 wickets and claimed his 400th by getting rid of Rahul Dravid. Peter was proved right!
