'I have no plan of retirement'
Source: DNA India Date: March 14, 2008
Sourav Ganguly is not thinking about retirement yet and is planning a comeback into the ODIs. Leave aside retirement, former India captain Sourav Ganguly is mulling another comeback in the shorter versions of the game after he was dropped from the ODI and twenty20 squads that played in Australia. Flooded with interview requests, Ganguly took his time out and spoke on various issues in a tête-à-tête with the DNA on Thursday. Excerpts:
What are your
plans for the upcoming
South Africa
Series?
There
is actually no plan rather than try and get as many runs as
possible…I am just concentrating on performing in each and every
game that I get to play.
Do you think India
can be world’s No. 1 team now in the near future?
India has been among top teams for quite some time now and
in Australia
we played wonderfully. But I don’t believe in numbers. We have been
playing well, we are playing well and we will be playing well in the
future too.
Are you taking IPL
as a platform to stage another comeback in the shorter version of
the game?
Not really. This is a new format and I want to enjoy my cricket and
perform as well. The rest is not in my hands. I can only score runs.
Don’t you think
after scoring so many runs you should've been in for the ODI?
Yes. I scored a lot of runs in the last calendar year. But I can
only focus on my batting and the rest is not in my hand.
How long do you wish to continue?
(Laughs)! In plain and simple words, I have no plan of retirement as
of now…I wish to continue till the day I perform…I will keep on
playing all the versions of the game till I keep performing in
those.
What is inside you that keeps on
going even at 35?
It’s not only for me, I think for everyone the hunger for success is
the main thing that keeps you going. I still feel that fire in me
and so I will continue as long as that is still there.
Is there any feat that you feel you
need to achieve?
(Again laughs) Yes a lot of things…the main thing is the performance
and nothing else matters.
Don’t you think you will have
problems handling with Shoaib Akhtar?
There’s no question of handling anybody. Shoaib is one of the
fastest bowlers in the world and so is Ishant Sharma. I think we all
will get a good opportunity to perform in this new format of
cricket.
Do you regret of not getting any
player whom you wanted?
(Pause)! Brett Lee…(laughs)! You cannot get all the players.
Anyways, We have a good combination legendary batsman like Ricky
Ponting, David Hussey, Shoaib, Ishant, Brendon McCullam and many. I
am very satisfied with what I have.
